Size: 207 acres
Location: The Cane River National Heritage Area extends approximately a mile on either side of the Cane River from the southern boundary of the City of Natchitoches to Monette's Ferry, Louisiana. The headquarters for the national historical park is at Oakland Plantation in Natchitoches Parish. Take I-49 to Exit 127 (Flora/Cypress Exit), then east 1.5 miles on Hwy. 120. Cross over LA 1 onto LA 494, then 4 miles on Hwy. 494 to Oakland Plantation. The park will be to the west.
Description: Park preserves significant landscapes, sites, and structures associated with the development of Creole culture in both urban and rural settings. Oakland Plantation, the outbuildings of Magnolia Plantation, Cane River corridor, the historic district of the town of Natchitoches, and the Fort Jessup and Las Adaes sites are important components.
Activities: The 67 historic structures of Cane River Creole National Historical Park are benefiting from extensive restoration and rehabilitation. The interpretive program Plantation Life: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow is designed for general audiences and offered daily at Oakland Plantation. Tours of Magnolia Plantation my be arranged with prior notice. Special programs concentrating on history, architecture, and slavery are available through advance arrangement. The park is developing a self-guided tour of Magnolia Plantation and also hosts special events throughout the year.History: Authorized on November 2, 1994.
