Size: 1 acre

Location: In Battery park at the southern tip of Manhattan, New York.

Description: Built from 1808-1811, this structure served successively as a defense for New York harbor, a promenade and entertainment center, and an immigration depot through which more than 8 million people entered the United States from 1855 to 1890. From 1896 until 1941, it served as the New York City Aquarium and was one of the city's most popular attractions.

Activities: Ranger-led programs and tours are offered throughout the day. Costumed interpreters describe the harbor defenses of New York City during the War of 1812.Ranger-led programs and tours last 20 to 60 minutes. Self-guided tours require 20 minutes.

Operating Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily. Closed December 25.
