Ashley National Forest
Located in northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming, this 1.3-million-acre forest ranges from high desert country at 6,000 feet to 13,528 feet above sea level at the summit of Kings Peak. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing.

Boise National Forest
Located north and east of the city of Boise, ID, the 2.6-million-acre forest includes pure or mixed stands of ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine and subalpine fir. It includes large areas of summer range for big game species, such as mule deer and Rocky Mountain elk.

Bridger-Teton National Forest
As part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, this 3.4-million-acre forest in western Wyoming is the second largest national forest outside Alaska. It includes more than 1.2 million acres of wilderness as well as the Gros Ventre, Teton, Salt River, Wind River, and Wyoming mountain ranges, from which spring the headwaters of the Green, Snake, and Yellowstone rivers

Dixie National Forest
At 2 million acres, the largest national forest in Utah straddles the divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado River. Its canyons are made up of many-colored cliffs and steep-walled gorges, and the red sandstone formations of Red Canyon rival those of Bryce Canyon National Park.

Fishlake National Forest
Located in central Utah, this 1.4-million-acre national forest features varied landscape, from red-rock plateaus in the southeast corner to timbered slopes in the high elevations. Fremont State Park, located within the forest's boundaries, preserves the remains of the largest known village site of the Fremont Native American culture, which thrived from 400 to 1150.

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest
Located in Nevada and eastern California, the largest national forest unit outside of Alaska comprises nearly 6.5 million acres. With some areas more than 500 miles apart, it features great variations in climate, geology and topography, flora and fauna, scenery and recreation opportunities. This includes arid desert as well as numerous subalpine areas, 11,000 feet and above.
