The National Park Service purchased the Franklin Canyon Ranch in 1981 to become part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Today the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority manages park operations through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service. The lake and pond serve as a permanent and seasonal home for birds in the Pacific flyway.
