Delaware State Park Jobs and Career Opportunities

Interview with a State Park Ranger, Regional Supervisor

By Darren Smith, About.com

Name: Scott P. Carrow

Current Position: State Park Ranger, Regional Supervisor

How long have you been with Delaware State Parks and in what capacity?

  • 18 years full-time enforcement and safety.
  • 4 years seasonal maintenance, rental attendant, and park patrol.

How did you become involved in working as a Park Ranger?
I wanted to be a Park Ranger since I was 12 years old. I grew up one mile from a state park and spent my summers there.

Describe a typical day at your job.
(If there is no such thing as a typical day, then please tell us about your primary responsibilities and duties.)

  • Patrol duties in urban, suburban and rural park areas for safety and crime detection and prevention.
  • Supervision of full time and seasonal enforcement staffs throughout the north half of the State.
  • Development of policy, coordination of special event coverage, and liaison to other police departments and Attorney General's office.

How many hours a week do you work in this position?
37.5 base; 40 hrs is more reasonable.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
Contact with the public. I enjoy helping people, whether they are in distress or at leisure.

What do you find to be the greatest challenges of your job?
Funding is a difficult issue. Delaware State Parks are 70 % self funded through entrance and program fees. Our need increases each year, however, our funding usually remains consistent.

What kind of training/schooling is required in your position?
At this time one must possess either an associate’s degree or a current Delaware Council on Police Training Certificate to meet the minimum application requirements.

Is there any kind of training or general experience that you wish you had before taking your job?
I worked at a State Park in various capacities during the four summers throughout college. This was invaluable experience. I gained insight into many aspects of park enforcement and management. I studied and received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Park Administration from the University of Delaware. The program at that time was practically tailored to the State Park system.

I would not change anything.

What are a few of the projects that you've been working on recently that have been the most interesting?
Employee development and specialization of training incentives for staff retention.

If someone were interested in working as a Park Ranger at a state park, what advice could you give them?
Spend at least one summer season working for the organization you are considering; a ride-a-long is not sufficient.
