How to Get to the Wright Brothers National Memorial:

The Wright Brothers National Memorial is located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the town of Kill Devil Hills, midway between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head on US 158.

Park Size:

28 acres.

Description:

The first sustained flight in a heavier-than-air machine was made here by Wilbur and Orville Wright on December 17, 1903. The Wright Brothers National Memorial includes museum exhibits, reconstructed camp buildings, the first flight area, and a 60-foot granite monument perched atop 90-foot-tall Kill Devil Hill commemorating the achievement of these two visionaries from Dayton, Ohio.

Things to Do at the Wright Brothers National Memorial:

Park offers a number of programs (particularly during the summer months), including a flight room talk, first flight tour, life at Kitty Hawk, kite flight, and more. Check at the Visitor Center (252-441-7430) for a complete schedule.

Operating Hours:

The park is open 9am-6pm in the summer and 9am-5pm the rest of the year.

History of the Wright Brothers National Memorial:

Authorized as Kill Devil Hill Monument National Memorial on March 2, 1927; transferred from War Department on August 10, 1933; redesignated on December 1, 1953.
